Miike Coal Mine started its mining in the Tokayama area in the north-eastern part of Omuta City. In the Meiji era, with the completion of pitheads at the Oura, Nanaura, Kattachi, and Miyanohara Pits, the mining area moved into the south-west ward. In 1897, the construction of the Manda Pit began and the pit started its operation in 1902. All the main pitheads of Miike Coal Mine were linked by the coal mine railway. In the late Meiji era, the line of facilities required to export coal from Miike Port was completed and therefore the infrastructure system of coal mining, land transport and ocean transport was complete.
