Apart from transports its miners up and down, the No. 2 Shaft played a role in ventilation and drainage. For ventilation, the Pit was in the best airtight structure possible at that time. A revolving door remains by the signals, and the walls and ceiling were covered with brick, concrete and steel sheets. There were eight wooden guide poles reaching from the Vertical Shaft Pit Tower to the bottom of the pit in the old days. The poles served as guide rails and for emergency stops.
