The building of Shokuba was built in the early Showa era. It is a single story house with clay tile roofing and had an area of approximately 162m2. After the closure of the Miike coal mine, most of its roof and framing collapsed due to typhoon damage. In the reconstruction work that was started in 2010, the whole building was dismantled and rebuilt using as many reusable materials as possible to recapture its appearance when the pit closed in 1997. With the guidance and advice from a group of people from the Agency of Cultural Affairs and overseas specialists including a world heritage consultant, Dr. Michael Pearson, we conducted successful reconstruction work. This could be a great example for other reconstruction work of cultural properties in Japan.
