During the end of the Meiji and Taisho eras, most power at the Manda Pit was generated by burning coal in the boiler house to generate steam. The boiler house had three boilers, from Number 1 to 3; this is where the Number 1 boiler used to be. The steam from boiler was sent to three places: the steam pump at the bottom of the pit, the hoist machine room, and the fan room. The brick walls on both sides of you are the walls of the old boiler house and the space here would be inside the original boiler room. A British-made boiler called Lancashire was sitting in this room.
