At that time, there was a Tower of 30.7m high and this No. 1 Shaft was mainly used to bring the coal to the ground level and to drain groundwater. This big concrete wall is the pedestal of the No. 1 Shaft Tower. The Tower, twice as wide as the No. 2 Shaft Tower, was located here, and contained four cages designed to bring the coal up to ground level. The No. 1 Shaft Tower was dismantled in 1954 when the Manda Pit was closed, and the tower was moved to the Mitsui-Ashibetsu Coal Mine and reused. The pithead is now a 271m deep hole but is retained for groundwater management. The level of groundwater still comes up to 40m below ground level.
